Claude Just Became a Teammate You Can Tag in Slack

3 min read

On June 23, 2026, Anthropic launched Claude Tag. In plain terms, you can now add Claude to a Slack channel and tag @Claude to hand it real work, the same way you would ask a coworker. It remembers the channel, connects to your tools, and works in the background while your team carries on.

If your business runs on Slack, this is worth understanding now, because it turns AI from a separate app you visit into a teammate that sits where your work already happens.

What Claude Tag is

Claude Tag adds Claude to your Slack as a team member. An admin grants it access to chosen channels and connects it to the tools and data you pick, like Notion, Google Drive, or your CRM. Then anyone in the channel can tag @Claude with a task and get on with their day. Claude breaks the task into steps, does the work with the tools it has, and replies in the thread when it is done.

Anthropic says this is already how a lot of their own work gets done, and the pattern is spreading beyond engineering into things like chasing down numbers, working through support tickets, and pulling together updates.

Why it matters for a small team

Most AI use today is one person, in one chat, explaining everything from scratch. Claude Tag is different in four ways that matter when a team is involved.

  • It is shared. One Claude in a channel works with everyone, so the whole team sees what it is doing and can pick up where someone left off.

  • It learns over time. As it follows the channel, it builds context, so you stop re-explaining your business. It does not read private channels.

  • It takes initiative. Turn on ambient mode and it flags things you might need to know and follows up on tasks that have gone quiet.

  • It works in the background. Set it a task and move on. It can even schedule work to run over hours or days.

You can also message it privately, and it replies using your own connected tools.

What you can actually use it for

  • Catch up after time away: "@Claude what did I miss in this channel today?"

  • Draft customer replies straight from a thread.

  • Pull this week's numbers from a connected tool.

  • Update a Notion project or pull a doc, without leaving Slack.

  • Hand off a longer task and let it work while you focus elsewhere.

The power grows with what you connect. Link Notion, your CRM, or your calendar, and a single tag in Slack can reach across all of them.

How to set it up

It takes an admin about fifteen minutes.

  1. If you do not have Slack, create a free workspace at slack.com and add your team.

  2. In your Claude admin settings, pair Claude Tag with your Slack workspace.

  3. Choose which tools and data Claude can use, and in which channels. Scope it on purpose, so a sales channel and an operations channel see only what they need.

  4. Set a monthly spend limit, for the whole company and per channel if you want.

  5. Test it in a private channel with a simple tag, then open it to the team.

You get an activity log showing everything Claude did and who asked for it, so you keep full oversight.

The honest caveats

  • It is in beta for Claude Team and Enterprise plans right now. If you are not on one of those, you can still set up Slack and be ready.

  • It runs on Opus 4.8 and replaces the older Claude in Slack app. Admins can opt in to migrate within 30 days, and eligible teams get a launch credit to try it.

  • Start small. Give it read access first, keep sensitive data out of channels that do not need it, and expand as you build trust.

Should you use it

If you are a solo operator, this is one to watch, not rush. If you run a team on Slack, it is worth a real test this week. Pick one channel where the same busywork keeps landing, connect a tool or two, and tag Claude with the jobs you keep doing by hand. The teams that win with AI are the ones who put it where the work already happens.

Fifteen years doing this for owners like you. Follow along and I will keep the fixes coming.
