How Local Businesses Get Found in AI Search: Authentic Content and Reviews

Search is moving to AI answers. People ask Google, ChatGPT, or Perplexity for a recommendation and get a short list back. Getting onto that list now comes down to one thing: looking real. AI favours businesses that are active, honest, and trusted, and it quietly skips the ones that look polished or fake.

Two terms matter here.

  • AEO, answer engine optimization: being the direct answer in AI results, snippets, and voice search.

  • GEO, generative engine optimisation: being the source AI cites and recommends inside tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews.

Both reward the same things: real photos, real activity, and real reviews. Here is how to do it.

Photos and captions

AI reads your images and what you say about them. Authentic beats polished every time.

  • Drop the stock photos. Google rewards real, well-lit, in-focus shots of your team, your work, and your space. Stock and heavily edited images work against you.

  • Post each finished job right away. The moment you wrap, add a photo to your Google Business Profile. Fresh and frequent tells Google you are active.

  • Describe what is happening and where. In the caption, say what the photo shows and the town or area it is in. That tells AI what you do and where you serve.

  • Use before-and-after shots. For service work, these are some of the strongest trust signals you can post.

  • Write like a person. Plain language, your real voice, and the location. Do not stuff keywords.

Example caption: "Before and after our team rebuilt this back deck in Etobicoke. Cedar boards, new railings, finished in two days."

Google Business Profile

Your profile is the first place local AI answers pull from. Treat it like a live channel, not a set-and-forget listing.

  • Update it weekly. A new photo or post every week, at minimum. Inactive profiles go stale fast.

  • Refresh your services every week. Keep your service list current so AI knows exactly what you offer.

  • Fill in every field. Categories, service area, hours, and a real description.

  • Use video and virtual tours where you can. Interior, exterior, and 360 shots all add trust.

  • Edit any AI-suggested replies. Google may suggest review responses. Rewrite them in your own words with specific details so they do not sound robotic.

Reviews, the right way

Reviews are the trust signal AI leans on for local work. But how you collect them now matters as much as getting them.

  • Do not ask for reviews on-site. Google's 2026 policy filters reviews that come from your own wifi, IP, or location. A QR code at the counter, a review kiosk, or a tablet at checkout can get those reviews removed or shadow-filtered.

  • Ask later, from their own device. Send a text or email that evening, after the job. The review then comes from the customer's home network, where it counts.

  • Reply to every review in your own words. Address specifics. Thank the good ones, fix the bad ones calmly.

  • Never fake or AI-generate reviews. Google and Yelp can spot it and pull the reviews, or shut your account.

  • Monitor across platforms. Watch Google, Yelp, and the rest for trends and concerns.

Yelp and other review sites

A prediction worth acting on early: Yelp is set to matter again. AI answers lean on independent review sites to decide who to trust, so the platform many wrote off is becoming a citation source.

  • Claim and complete your Yelp profile.

  • Keep it authentic. Yelp bans AI-written reviews and removes them.

  • Treat any directory your trade uses the same way. Consistent name, address, and phone everywhere.

The quick checklist

  • Real photos only, no stock

  • Post each finished job to Google the moment it is done

  • Caption every photo with what it is and where

  • Before-and-after shots for service work

  • Update your Google Business Profile weekly

  • Refresh your services list weekly

  • Reviews requested by text or email after the job, never on-site or by QR

  • Reply to every review in your own voice

  • No fake or AI-written reviews, ever

  • Claim and keep your Yelp profile real

  • Same name, address, and phone across every listing

Do the first four this week. Real photos and steady reviews move the needle fastest for local work, and the rest stacks on top.

Fifteen years doing this for owners like you. Follow along and I will keep the fixes coming.
