How Local Service Businesses Get Listed in AI Search (GEO and AEO)
Search is moving to AI answers. People ask Google, ChatGPT, and Perplexity for a recommendation, and the AI hands back a short answer with a few trusted names. If you are not one of those names, you are invisible, even if you used to rank.
Two ideas matter now.
AEO, answer engine optimisation: being picked as the direct answer when someone asks a question, in Google AI Overviews, voice search, and snippets.
GEO, generative engine optimisation: being cited and recommended inside AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Mode.
Both come down to the same job. Be the clearest, most trusted answer to the questions your customers actually ask. Here is how.
1. Own your Google Business Profile
This is the first place local AI answers pull from. Fill in every field. Pick the right primary and secondary categories, list your services, set your service area, hours, and real photos. Post updates often, because the latest core update rewards active, real businesses. Answer the questions in the Q and A section, and seed the common ones yourself.
2. Answer the real questions customers ask
AI pulls passages, not whole pages. Build pages that answer exact questions, like how much a job costs in your city, how long it takes, or whether to repair or replace. Lead each page with a direct answer in about 40 to 60 words, then add the detail underneath. Put an FAQ section in plain customer language. Use a simple table when you compare options, and numbered steps for how-tos.
3. Stack real proof
AI leans on trust signals, and for local work that means reviews. Get a steady flow of them and keep them fresh. Use specific numbers and results instead of "best in town." Put the owner's name and real experience on the page, since AI favours content with a clear, credible author. Show dates and keep the information current.
4. Be everywhere AI looks
AI often cites you from places other than your own site. Keep your name, address, and phone identical across every directory and review site. Get listed on the directories that matter for your trade. Answer questions on Reddit and Quora for your area and your work. Post short how-to videos on YouTube, which Google AI Overviews quote often. Aim for a mention or two in local press or from partners.
5. Add the structured data
Structured data tells AI exactly what you are. Add LocalBusiness schema, plus FAQ and Review schema. Most site builders have a plugin for this, or your web person can add it in an hour. Pages with it get picked noticeably more often.
6. Let the AI in
Check that your site does not block AI crawlers in your robots file. The ones to allow are GPTBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, and ClaudeBot. If they are blocked, those tools cannot cite you at all.
7. Get starred as a preferred source
Google now lets people choose preferred sources that show in their AI answers, with a Preferred badge and roughly twice the clicks. Ask your happy customers and your followers to set you as one. It takes them a single tap, and it turns your audience into a direct visibility signal.
8. Check your results once a month
Search your top customer questions in Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity. Note whether you show up and who shows up instead. Fix the pages where a competitor is getting picked and you are not.
